Book 33: Hillbilly Elegy

One of my goals for 2020 is to read more. What better way than to commit to reading one book a week? 52 books in 52 weeks and I’ll be sharing every single one on the blog, every Sunday. Check in for my latest reads and recommendations.

Last week on our way up to Maine, Ryan and I listened to a bit of the “Hillbilly Elegy” audio book. I continued it the following week and y’all, it’s one of my favorites. Ryan and I have both read the story before but honestly, it was even better the second time. You forget how interesting the characters and their realities really are.

J.D. Vance is a fabulous storyteller who’s lived through some challenging experiences. However, they’re normal to the average “hillbilly” living in Appalachia, a population most of us Americans know nothing about. The culture behind these populations is fascinating and the effect of drug abuse is startlingly. Being from the East Coast, I feel like every time I read this story, a curtain is being pulled removed my view of the United States. Life in our country looks so different for so many people in so many different places.

If you haven’t read “Hillbilly Elegy” I would highly recommend it. Word is they have a movie in the works, which I’m excited to see come to production. Overall, a definite favorite.
