It’s the first day of summer and I couldn’t be more excited. School is out, the weekend forecast looks amazing, and my calendar is booked up with adventures and old friends. Most days, I find that I’m racking my brain for things to do in the area. That being said, I’ve complied a list of summer events on Aquidneck Island that I love attending. If you’re visiting, or a local looking for a staycation, these are definitely worth your time.
Newport International Polo Series
I’ve been attending Newport Polo since I was a little kid. We used to tailgate in the back of a pickup truck and stomp the divots. Now, we wine and dine while we watch the (non)locals teeter around in the grass, drunk and unstable on their high heels.
The sporting event itself is a lot of fun and begins at 5:15 most Saturdays during the summer. The full schedule can be found online here. However, it is best to arrive early, to grab a spot and set up some chairs. Everything is pretty much BYOB so grab some friends and your biggest hat.
Sweet Berry Farm Summer Concert Series
If you need something to do on a Tuesday night, Sweet Berry Farm hosts live cover bands out on the lawn. Again, a perfect spot to picnic and drink with friends. The scenery is beautiful and there are always little kiddos running around. A very family friendly event!
There are themed menus planned by the farm and by sunset, it’s always comfortably cool and breezy. Overall, a free event that will make your week all the better
Newport FILM Outdoor Series
Another fun evening to add to your weekly calendar- Newport FILM showings. Newport FILM hosts outdoor movies at various locations around Newport, all incredibly beautiful. The documentaries are amazing themselves, and the free showings and popcorn are a real treat. It gets crowded early, so bring a chair and some snacks. There are tons of vendors to enjoy and if the weather is nice, it’s a beautiful evening.
Newport Folk and Jazz Festival
The Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals are iconic. My family has been attending the Folk Festival for years and it is definitely one of the highlights of the summer. The lineups are always outstanding and tickets sell out fast so if you’re really interested, check them out online or on Instagram and keep an eye out in December. As for the jazz festival, tickets can be purchased closer to the event. No ticket? Grab a kayak, launch nearby at King’s Park and join the crew of people listening from the harbor.
Aquidneck Island Farmers’ Market
You’ll find local vendors selling fresh produce Wednesday afternoons on Bellevue and Saturday mornings at Newport Vineyards. The Aquidneck Island Farmers’ Market has a slew of organic products and I love that you’re supporting small businesses when you shop. These markets run throughout the summer and are definitely worth checking out.
Quonset Farms Strawberry Picking
I recently learned, thanks to our local newspaper, that strawberry season really only lasts for a few weeks, from mid June to early July. However, while the season occurs, Quonset Farms is the place to pick. Their fields overlook the water and contain rows and rows of beautiful fruit. Plus, their prices are really reasonable. It makes for a great afternoon to head out and do some picking.
