DIY Hanging Planters
A few posts back I wrote about 5 Tips for Decorating Your Dorm Room, one of those being using plants as decoration. That being said, I discovered this tutorial on Ikea a little while ago and wanted to try to create something similar for room this fall. The materials needed are incredibly basic: a plant in a pot and rope. However, because I cannot hang plants from the ceiling of my dorm room, I bought an inexpensive clothing rack to use.
Along with two hanging planters, I created a hanging tray with the same rope and a wooden cutting board. If you’d like to see a more detailed tutorial on that piece, let me know.
Creating the hanging planters was incredibly simple. However, if I were to do this again, I would have opted for a wool rope which I believe would have been easier to tie. However, with the rope I had, I measured out one piece (per planter) that was ten feet long. I looped the string over the top of the bar of my clothing rack and then twisted the strands under the bottom of the plant pot. Then I brought them up on the opposite side; as if you are wrapping a present in string. Finally I brought the strings back up to the top and tied a solid knot.
I’m sure you can get more creative with this DIY if you wish, but I actually really like the simplicity of the crossed rope. I think they really complimented the wooden pots that I purchased. I potted Mother of Millions; the lady at the farm stand told me they are a very forgiving species.
Let me know if you try this DIY yourself, or if you’ve completed any others like it! Also, does anyone have any ideas about hanging things from a dorm ceiling without actually drilling holes or using screws? This is the one thing that in four years, I haven’t managed to figure out.
