One place that’s always on our trip itinerary when we visit Ithaca is the weekend farmer’s market. Every Saturday and Sunday in the summer, on the bank of Cayuga Lake, venders stretch up and down the isles of the old barn with incredible food, beautiful flowers, fresh produce, and neat trinkets to sell. There is live music wherever you turn, children running around and plenty of people watching to do.
Farmer’s Markets are so important, bringing healthy, affordable produce to many and emphasizing the importance to ‘buy local.’ By supporting local farmers, you increase production in your town, keep small companies and very hard working people in business, and get a wonderful product yourself. There’s also a bit of comfort that comes with knowing exactly where your food is from. My hometown is a small farm town as well, and on ‘the island’ there are many farmer’s markets to celebrate what local farmers grow right around us. I would definitely recommend finding one in your area and utilizing the great service it gives!
